CIRIP Engages Chief Justice on Strengthening Insolvency and Restructuring Practice
The Chartered Institute of Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners (CIRIP) Ghana has held a high‑level engagement with the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe‑Bonnie, to discuss measures aimed at strengthening insolvency and restructuring practice within the judicial system.
The meeting took place on 26th March 2026 at the Supreme Court Conference Room and formed part of CIRIP’s ongoing stakeholder engagement efforts following its transition into a statutory professional body.
CIRIP’s delegation was led by its President, Mr. Felix Addo, and included Prof. Justice Samuel Kofi Date‑Bah (Honorary Council Member), Mr. George N. Owodo (Chief Executive Officer), and Mr. Emmanuel Hanson (Chief Operating Officer). The engagement attracted senior members of the Judiciary, including Justices of the Supreme Court, the Presidents of the Court of Appeal and High Court, and officials of the Judicial Service.
The visit also provided an opportunity for CIRIP to congratulate the Chief Justice on his appointment and formally introduce the Institute’s mandate and role in supporting Ghana’s reformed insolvency regime. CIRIP traced its evolution from the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA) to its establishment under the CIRIP Act, 2024, following years of advocacy for modern business rescue frameworks.
Discussions focused on the need to align court procedures with the Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Act, 2020, particularly through the revision of Order 60 of the High Court Rules to reflect contemporary restructuring, administration, and cross‑border insolvency practice. The Chief Justice welcomed CIRIP’s proposals and directed that engagements be held with the Rules of Court Committee as ongoing revisions to the Rules progress.
CIRIP also emphasized the importance of continuous judicial training in insolvency and restructuring matters, noting the evolving and technical nature of the field. The Chief Justice acknowledged the importance of capacity building and supported initiatives to expand training opportunities for judges, including participation in international insolvency programmes.
The possibility of establishing specialized courts or dedicated judicial arrangements for insolvency and restructuring matters was also discussed, with emphasis on improving efficiency, consistency, and timeliness in handling corporate distress cases.
The engagement concluded on a positive note, with the Judiciary and CIRIP reaffirming their commitment to collaboration in strengthening Ghana’s business rescue framework and enhancing the effectiveness of insolvency administration.
