CIRIP Hosts Insightful Engagement on Ethics as a Risk Management Tool

The Chartered Institute of Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners (CIRIP) Ghana held its second Membership Engagement Session on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, reinforcing its commitment to ethical leadership and high professional standards in insolvency and restructuring practice.

The virtual session, held via Microsoft Teams, under the theme The CIRIP Standard: Ethics as the Ultimate Risk Management Tool in Restructuring and Insolvency in Ghana.” formed part of the Institute’s ongoing member engagement and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme.

Opening the session, Mrs. Petrina Quaye, Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager and Executive Secretary, welcomed members and guests and encouraged continued engagement on matters shaping the profession. She also reminded participants that the CIRIP Code of Ethics is available on the Institute’s website as a key reference for practice.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. George Owodo, highlighted the progress made under Ghana’s evolving insolvency framework. He noted that while the legal and regulatory environment has significantly improved, the effectiveness of the system ultimately depends on the conduct of practitioners. He stressed that ethical compliance is no longer optional, as breaches carry clear professional and statutory consequences.

Practical Insights from Industry Leaders

The session featured presentations from Mr. Andrew Akoto, Country Managing Partner of KPMG Ghana, and Mr. Julius Ayivor, Partner in Forensic Advisory at KPMG Ghana.

Mr. Akoto emphasised the importance of ethics in managing the competing interests that arise in insolvency situations, noting that trust and transparency are critical to successful business recovery outcomes.

Mr. Ayivor delivered a practical and thought-provoking presentation, highlighting ethics as a core element of risk management. Drawing on real-life examples, he demonstrated how lapses in professional conduct can lead to significant legal, reputational, and financial consequences. He further outlined the key principles of the CIRIP Code of Ethics and their relevance across the entire insolvency process.

Member Engagement and Perspectives

The session was interactive, with members raising questions and sharing practical experiences. Discussions touched on regulatory expectations, professional responsibilities, and the application of ethical judgment in complex situations.

A notable contribution came from the Registrar of Companies, Mrs. Maame Samma Peprah, who emphasised the importance of compliance with reporting requirements and adherence to both statutory and ethical standards in practice.

Looking Ahead

The session concluded with updates on CPD certification, membership records, and upcoming Institute activities, including a seminar on non-performing loans and preparations for CIRIP’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

In delivering the vote of thanks, Ms. Clara Amarteifio-Taylor commended the speakers and participants for a meaningful and engaging session, noting the central role of ethics in maintaining public trust and strengthening the profession.

The engagement once again underscored CIRIP Ghana’s commitment to promoting ethical practice, strengthening professional capacity, and fostering continuous dialogue within the insolvency and restructuring community.
